Katz
Founder and President of the Board, Rainforest Alliance
Daniel R. Katz, a dedicated social entrepreneur, has spent over 35 years founding, developing, leading, advising, and coaching organizations, predominantly in the environmental sector. At the age of 24, he co-founded the Rainforest Alliance and took on the role of Executive Director. He continues to contribute to the organization as the Chair of its Board of Directors. Today, the Rainforest Alliance has over 700 staff and an annual budget exceeding $110 million.
Daniel has directed the environmental program for The Overbrook Foundation, a philanthropic foundation based in New York City, for two decades. He now serves as their Lead Environmental Advisor. During his tenure at Overbrook, Daniel was responsible for over $75M in grants. He continues to provide guidance to 50 nonprofit leaders annually and brings sustainable investment opportunities to the Foundation’s investment managers.
With over a dozen years of experience as an Executive Coach, Daniel has honed his skills in this field. In 2017, he earned a certification from the Hudson Institute of Coaching in Santa Barbara, California. Shortly thereafter, he received accreditation from the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Daniel's coaching expertise spans a wide range of clients, including nonprofit executives, individuals working in philanthropy, and those navigating career transitions.
Daniel Katz lived and studied in China, including a year studying Chinese linguistics in Wuhan, P.R.C., where he was a State of Ohio-Province of Hubei Fellow. He was also a Kellogg Foundation National Leadership Fellow. His board/advisory board service is broad and ranges from start-ups like Perpetual, working to build a reuse society in the United States, to the Nespresso Sustainability Advisory Board, one of the leading companies supporting coffee farmers worldwide. He has edited two books: Why Freedom Matters and Tales: Celebrating the Declaration of Independence in Two Centuries of Prose, Poetry, and Song (Workman) and Tales from the Jungle, a Rainforest Reader (Random House). Daniel is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and received his MBA from the Stern School of Business, New York University, where he taught a few courses on the Business of Sustainability. Over the years, he has given hundreds of talks, lectures, interviews, presentations, etc.
Originally from Ohio, Daniel still claims his midwestern roots as a lifelong Cincinnati Reds and Bengals fan. He lives in New York City with his wife, Maggie. They are the parents of two wonderful young adults and one big dog.
