Senior researcher in Urban Health and Climate Change, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid

Ione Avila-Palencia is a researcher working at the intersection of urban health, climate action, and community engagement. With over 10 years of experience, her work explores how urban design and transport systems can support healthier, more sustainable ways of living. She has contributed to several European research projects, collaborating with multidisciplinary and international teams to better understand the links between cities, mobility, and health.

She is currently a senior researcher at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM), where she is involved in the Pathfinder initiative. Her work focuses on integrating health into climate mitigation strategies and on developing indicators that help make these connections visible and actionable in urban contexts.

Alongside her research, she is particularly interested in participatory and co-creation processes that bring together researchers, policymakers, and communities. She works on translating complex evidence into accessible narratives and facilitating dialogue to support more inclusive and informed decision-making in cities.
