Brouwer
CEO, The Currency Exchange Fund
Ruurd Brouwer was appointed CEO of TCX in January 2015. Under his leadership the fund's
impact and hedging volume grew almost ten times.
Ruurd is driven by the conviction that private and public borrowers in emerging and
frontier markets should always be offered a choice between a hard currency loan with
currency risk, or the indexed local currency alternative.
Prior to joining TCX he held several senior management positions within FMO, amongst
which Director Africa and chair of the Credit Committee. He started at FMO as Investment
Officer Africa focusing on Financial Institutions, Capital Markets and Infrastructure.
During his career, Ruurd served in the Board of Directors of Financial Institutions in
Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal and Mauretania as well as several Swiss and Luxembourg
based impact funds. He was member/chair of the Investment Committee of Emerging
Africa Infrastructure Fund, Capital Alliance Private Equity Nigeria and Bix Fund. Today, he
chairs the Global Gender Smart Fund and is Commissioner at the United Nations Global
Commission for Urban SDG Finance.
Ruurd started his career in 1993 at the United Nations Protection Force followed by the
Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the private sector department.
Parallel to his professional career, Ruurd was lecturer at The Hague University of Applied
Sciences and Guest Lecturer at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. He enjoys teaching on
banking, emerging markets and financial stability and publishes frequently on these topics.
